This January 25, head to Scotland to celebrate Robert Burns, Scotland’s national poet. The day is traditionally marked with a Burns supper comprising pipes, prayers, poetry, songs, speeches and the ritual slicing of a steaming haggis. Sometimes kilts are worn, too. After the meal there’s a party with plenty of whisky and Scottish country dancing to round things off.
Robert Burns wrote some of the world’s best loved poetry including A Red, Red Rose and Ae Fond Kiss and you’ll find Burns events all over the globe. If you want to find out more about this icon of Scottishness the best place to start is the Robert Burns Birthplace Museum in Alloway, Ayrshire. Renovated in 2010, it’s home to thousands of manuscripts, rare editions, personal artefacts and other items connected to Burns, offering a collection that will provide unrivalled access for researchers, students, tourists and Burns-lovers alike.
