North Berwick

From Edinburgh head for North Berwick, stopping on the outskirts to admire the ruined Dirleton Castle and its beautiful gardens. Located beneath a colossal volcanic hill - North Berwick Law - the town is an enchanting Victorian harbour resort and haven for seabirds and marine wildlife.

Dunbar

As you follow the coast, take time to explore the area. Visit the medieval Tantallon Castle, which offers commanding views of the Firth of Forth. Stroll through Dunbar and see the fragmented remains of its once mighty castle. Linger by the harbour in picturesque St Abbs.

Kelso

Kelso is a handsome border town with a spacious cobbled square and elegant town hall. Don’t miss the stout 16th century Smailholm Tower which displays tapestries and statues, or the turreted mansion of Floors Castle, designed by William Adam in the 18th century, houses fine furniture and artworks.

Day 2: Kelso - Moffat - Dumfries

Kelso - Moffat: 52½ miles (84.9 km)
Moffat - Dumfries: 21½ miles (34.3 km)

Moffat

Moving on to Moffat, you pass through the lovely Vale of Yarrow amidst the hills of the Ettrick Forest, rich in legend and immortalised in border ballads. Once a minor spa, Moffat today is a friendly tourist town with shops selling splendid local craft goods.

Dumfries

Dumfries, a historic royal burgh with red sandstone buildings and a 15th-century bridge is Robert Burns country. As you explore the town you will feel his presence everywhere, from his favourite pub to his former home and the award-winning Robert Burns Centre, housed in an old water mill.
