Built around an L-plan tower house of the early 15thC, Craigmillar was much expanded in the 15thC and 16thC. It is a handsome ruin, including a range of private rooms linked to the hall of the old tower. It was here that Mary Queen of Scots fled after the murder of Rizzio, and where the plot was hatched for the murder of her husband, Lord Darnley.
