The Blackhouse Complex is a traditional Lewis thatched house, fully furnished, complete with attached barn, byre and stockyard. A peat fire burns in the open hearth with the smoke filtering out through the roof. Although only just over a century old, the architecture and layout of the Blackhouse carry on a traditional form of living and working that dates back to the middle ages, into the Viking period and beyond.
