Standedge Tunnel is nearly 3 1/2 miles long, the highest, longest and deepest canal tunnel in the country. This is your chance to experience what it was like to go through the tunnel - without the hard work!
A glass-roofed boat travels into the first part of the tunnel, and with the help of a guide, you can learn about the trials and tribulations of the men responsible for this amazing feat of engineering.
In the free visitor centre you can discover more about the characters involved in the original idea, the local people who worked on it, and the goods which were transported from one side of the Pennines to the other. Enjoy some light refreshments at Tunnel End Cottages before heading off on one of the many local walks around the area or along the towpath, including the Standedge Trail and the Colne Valley circular.
With a whole host of events happening throughout the year, including a Yorkshire Day, Standedge is the perfect choice for a day out.
