Scalloway, the scenic ancient capital of Shetland, is a picturesque fishing village dominated by the ruined castle built in 1660 by forced labour under Earl Patrick Stewart at a turbulent time in Shetland's history. Earl Patrick and his son were eventually executed in Edinburgh for their excesses in Shetland. The key to the castle is obtained from Shetland Woollen Company. This is a convenient place to shop for Shetland's traditional knitwear.
