Dating from c.1150, the Parish Church of St Mary has survived siege and attack over the centuries to tell its fascinating story. First enlarged in 1180, 1200 saw the addition of north and south aisles, while the 14th century saw work begin on the transepts and chantry chapels on the south side of the church. The completion in 1450 of the 'Great Perpendicular Quire' marked what was to have been the final phase of building, however, St Mary's was used during the Civil War by Parliament's troops to launch an attack on the castle. The church was badly damaged and although the north aisle was rebuilt the great quire and north transept remain as ruins in the churchyard. Now perhaps best known as the final resting place of Anne Bronte.
