The jail was built in 1847, in line with reform measures. In season, actor-led tours take visitors through the preserved cells giving an insight into the life and times of a Victorian jail. At non-peak periods, the tour is enhanced by a 'wand' which gives a verbal description of the features of the jail. There are roof-top views via a glass-sided lift.
