London's large Chinese community welcomes the New Year with a colourful bang. Discover cultural events along the Strand, Charing Cross Road and Shaftesbury Avenue and catch splendid lion dances and performances in Trafalgar Square, starting with a parade into Chinatown itself.
Commencing at midday in Trafalgar Square, London's Chinese New Year celebrations are the biggest in the world outside of China, and a colourful introduction to the most vibrant and jubilant aspects of Chinese culture.
Events take place throughout the day but as the sun starts to set, head north to Chinatown to explore the sumptuous food stalls. Lion dancers perform and the multitude of Chinese restaurants dotted throughout the area operate on a first-come, first-served basis, so you don't need to book a table to eat your dim sum.
The celebrations get bigger and better every year and London provides a wonderful stage on which to celebrate the cultural wealth of the city's Chinese community. Festivities end with a firework display.
