Allendale in Northumberland keeps a pagan ceremony to welcome in the New Year. Holding a procession through the town centre, men dress up with flaming whisky barrels filled with hot tar balanced on their heads, then toss them onto a bonfire...
Half an hour before New Year the flaming barrels (weighing up to 15kg) are tossed onto the unlit bonfire, setting it ablaze. On the stroke of midnight, everyone joins hands to dance around the fire and sing Auld Lang Syne.
