Barry Banks, British tenor
Richard Jones returns to English National Opera to direct this new production of Offenbach's The Tales of Hoffmann at the London Coliseum, conducted by Anthony Walker. Hoffmann belatedly fulfilled Offenbach's ambition to write grand opera but, tragically, he died during rehearsals.
At the Paris Opera Comique première, shorn of a whole act, Hoffmann (Barry Banks) had only two opportunities to tell of his amorous exploits. Jones returns to Offenbach's original version, with Hoffmann's three tragic loves all played by Georgia Jarman.
First is the doll Olympia, whom Hoffmann, through magic spectacles, thinks is human; then consumptive young singer Antonia; and, finally, Giulietta who Hoffmann loses after her manipulator, the magician Dapertutto, has stolen his shadow. And Hoffmann loses again as his nemesis Lindorf (Clive Bayley, who plays all other rivals) makes off with a fourth lover, Stella.
