Adapted by Mike Bartlett and directed by Edward Hall Chariots of Fire transfers from its acclaimed run at Hall's Hampstead Theatre to the Gielgud Theatre. You couldn't wish for a more apposite West End play to celebrate London hosting the 2012 Olympics.
Retelling the story of runners Eric Lidell (Jack Lowden) and Harold Abrahams (James McArdle) in the run up to the 1924 Paris Olympics, Chariots of Fire is based on Colin Welland's Oscar-winning 1981 film, complete with the famous score by Vangelis.
Both of our heroes have their own reasons for running, either for the glory of God, or to overcome racial prejudice. Together they epitomise the Olympic ideal of sporting endeavour. Hall's cast also includes Nicholas Grace, Simon Williams and Nicholas Woodeson, while Bartlett's recent plays have included Love, Love, Love, Earthquakes in London and 13.
