The cast of Trevor Nunn's production of Kiss Me Kate at London's Old Vic
Taking inspiration from Shakespeare's The Taming Of The Shrew, Kiss Me Kate is a Cole Porter's dazzling 1948 musical comedy full of backstage romance and on-stage calamity. Trevor Nunn brings his Chichester Festival Theatre co-production to the Old Vic.
Sam and Bella Spewack's book follows a troupe of Shakespearean actors on tour, where the on-stage antagonism between suitors Kate and Petruchio are replicated off-stage by separated couple Lilli Vanessi (Hannah Waddingham) and Fred Graham (Alex Bourne). Add in rivalries, debts and gangsters - couped with Cole Porter's classic score featuring such Broadway standards as Another Op'nin, Another Show, Always True to You (In my Fashion), Brush Up your Shakespeare, Too Darn Hot and Wunderbar - and you've got a classic Broadway musical comedy.
This show re-establishes Laurence Olivier's link between the Old Vic and 50-years-old Chichester Festival Theatre.
By Tube & Rail: to Waterloo Station (Jubilee, Northern and Bakerloo lines).
