Rob Brydon leads the cast in Trevor Nunn's production of Alan Ayckbourn's A Chorus of Disapproval at the Harold Pinter Theatre
West-End deubtant Rob Brydon stars in Alan Ayckbourn's A Chorus of Disapproval at the Harold Pinter Theatre. Trevor Nunn directs this wicked am-dram comedy, also starring Nigel Harman and Ashley Jensen, which marks its first West End outing in 25 years.
Backstage plays are "in" at the moment, led by the Old Vic's recent hit revival of Michael Frayn's Noises Off and its forthcoming Chichester transfer of Cole Porter's Kiss Me Kate, also directed by Trevor Nunn.
When young, shy widower Guy Jones (Harman) auditions for the Pendon Amateur Light Operatic Society's production of The Beggars' Opera, he gets more than he bargains for. The director Dafyyd (Brydon) latches on to him, and so do most of the ladies, including Daffyd's wife Hannah (Jensen). Aykbourn reveals the all-too credible shenanigans behind the scenes in amateur theatricals.
