Christmas Markets 2012
There’s no better place to fill up on roast chestnuts, hot mulled wine and festive cheer than a traditional Christmas market or fair. Indulge in some essential gift shopping, enjoy carol singing and experience the sights and smells of the season.
Here are some of our favourite Christmas markets:
Bath Christmas Market
The beautiful Bath Christmas Market has a great setting between Bath Abbey and the world-famous Roman Baths. Hundreds of traditional wooden chalets twinkle under fairy lights, offering handmade and unusual gifts, Christmas decorations and more. When you’ve finished shopping, warm up at Thermae Bath Spa, Britain’s only natural hot-spring spa.
Lincoln Christmas Market
The charming medieval town of Lincoln hosted one of the UK’s first continental-style markets which continues to grow each year. You’ll find a mix of quality hand-crafted goods, gifts, locally produced specialist foods and entertainment all against the backdrop of Lincoln's gothic cathedral and Norman castle..
Birmingham Frankfurt Christmas Market
The Frankfurt Christmas Market is a symbol of Birmingham’s strong relationship with its sister city, Frankfurt. It’s the largest Christmas market in the UK and one of the largest in Europe. Enjoy the feel of a small village within the heart of the bustling city centre, with picturesque wooden chalets offering a fabulous array of handmade gifts and traditional German items such as wooden toys, nativity scenes and marionettes. And of course, you can sample the delights of German mulled wine (Gluhwein), grilled sausages and gingerbread.
Winchester Christmas Market
Located around one of the finest medieval cathedrals in Europe, this market is inspired by traditional German Christmas markets with endless beautifully decorated wooden chalets and a programme of Christmassy activities. There’s also a British crafts village with gifts and products made locally. Have a skate on the ice rink then chill out and warm up with festive refreshments.
Edinburgh Christmas Markets
Scotland’s capital hosts five different Christmas markets including a traditional Highland village, an ethical Christmas fair and the Real Scottish Christmas Fair that sells warming Scottish food and drink and traditional crafts and gifts. You can also enjoy Edinburgh’s enormous Christmas celebrations that include an ice rink, special tours, a festive Ferris wheel, exhibitions, church services and, of course, the world-famous Hogmanay celebrations.
