At one end of St Aubin’s Bay, St Helier Harbour boasts one of Europe’s most modern marina complexes, with a reputation that attracts yachtsmen from the UK and the continent. Experience a day’s sailing and fishing by chartering a skippered yacht or motorboat. Or try a coastal cruise for a new perspective on Jersey. With the opportunity of a day trip to France and the other islands - all only a tide away - you’ll be spoilt for choice.
At the opposite end of the bay, in steep contrast to the bustle of the marina, is the charming fishing village of St Aubin. The rich merchants whose fortunes were made from the cod fleets of Newfoundland built their homes on the bulwarks, which now plays host to hungry travellers of a different generation by providing a gastronomic choice of restaurants and bars.
As the coast unwinds it leads you to the fortifications at Noirmont Point, a poignant reminder of WWII, past the sheltered bay at Portelet and on to the wonderful crescent that is St Brelade’s, with its historic Fishermen’s Chapel.
The south coast plays host every summer to Jersey’s Battle of Flowers, a truly spectacular carnival of elaborate floral floats escorted by costumed dancers and marching bands – a visual and musical extravaganza. At the Moonlight Parade, floats illuminate the summer night with magic and enchantment.
For quieter reflection, take in the tranquil interior of St Matthew’s Church, ‘The Glass Church’, with its glass sculptures by René Lalique.
