Day-time in Canterbury
Attractions
Canterbury’s breathtaking cathedral has to be first stop on your visit. This World Heritage Site dating back to 597 A.D is also the site of the martyrdom of Archbishop Thomas Becket, who was murdered here in 1170. His remains lie buried in the northwest transept. Why not combine a cathedral visit with evensong, to hear the world-renowned choir sing in this magnificent setting?
To get a flavour of this historic city explore Canterbury’s little medieval streets, such as Mercery Lane with its overhanging buildings. Stroll along the ancient city walls to get a bird’s eye view of the Dane John Gardens. During the summer there is a regular programme of bandstand concerts, and the gardens also host the hugely popular annual Christmas Euromarket.
There’s no better way to discover Canterbury’s past than by joining a Guided City Tour from the Visitor Information Centre. Or sit back and see the city in comfort with a boat trip or horse and carriage ride.
Drop into 14th century Canterbury and join Chaucer’s pilgrims when you visit the Canterbury Tales, where the sights, sounds and smells of medieval England are recreated.
