Night-time in Canterbury

Canterbury Cathedral - 12th Centure Quire

Entertainment

As well as mainstream cinema, you’ll also find more eclectic films in the city at Kent’s regional film theatre, Cinema 3, housed in the University’s Gulbenkian Theatre. The venue is hugely popular with students, locals and visitors alike, and has screenings every night during term time. Catch films ranging from the classics to new, non-mainstream English and foreign language films, as well as themed and retrospective seasons.

During the summer season various locations around the city become venues for open-air theatre and concerts. The ancient ruins of St Augustine’s Abbey recently became the backdrop for a Son et Lumière, bringing Canterbury’s story to life in sound and vision.

You can often catch open-air Shakespeare performances on summer evenings at the Abbey, whilst the Norman Castle has hosted both avant-garde productions and classic children’s favourites such as “Wind in the Willows”. The Dane John Gardens, meanwhile, are becoming known for the wide variety of musical events staged there, including the annual “Global Bandstand”. Most weekends in the summer months, you’ll be able to chill out and enjoy international musicians performing a wide repertoire.
