Day-time in Canterbury
Museums & galleries
Step below present-day Canterbury to discover an exciting part of the Roman town, including the remains of a real Roman house with fine mosaics, in the Roman Museum.
The Museum of Canterbury’s enthralling time-walk, housed in a beautiful medieval building, links the great events, famous people and precious objects of Canterbury’s 2,000-year history. Here you can also find a children’s museum featuring local celebrities such as Rupert Bear, Bagpuss and the Clangers, or visit wartime Canterbury in the Blitz Experience.
Climb the winding stair of the medieval West Gate Towers, one of England’s finest city gates, to see the guard chamber with its ‘murder holes’, and enjoy fine panoramic views from the battlements.
The Royal Museum and Art Gallery is home to a collection of works by local artist Thomas Sidney Cooper, and hosts a varied programme of exhibitions. Here too is the Buffs Museum – a branch of the National Army Museum.
