Night-time in Edinburgh

Spooky Edinburgh

Ghosts

Edinburgh has a dark and mysterious past, and tales of ghosts, ghouls, body snatching and torture abound within the city.

A variety of walking tours take you down the dark alleys and closes of Edinburgh's historic Old Town. These reveal some of the city's scariest and most haunted areas. Hear stories recounted by costumed guides as you visit scenes of horrendous torture, murder and supernatural happenings. Watch out! You may just see a few mysterious apparitions along the way…

Another tour takes you far below the busy, bustling Edinburgh streets to a dark, quiet, forgotten place known as the Underground Vaults, which was rediscovered 20 years ago after being abandoned for nearly 200 years.  Lying beneath the South Bridge, the wonderful underground rooms are built of ancient Edinburgh stone, with arched ceilings, fireplaces and 18th century wine vaults.

And beneath the Royal Mile lies a warren of concealed streets where people lived, worked and died in bygone centuries. Here you’ll discover the story of how the Burgh Council dealt with the plague epidemic of 1646 and visit a haunted room, which still sends shivers up the spine today.
