Day-time in Portsmouth
Walks
Walking is another favourite activity on a city break and the new Nelson Trail is just one of a number of interesting walks in Portsmouth. For a journey into the past, follow the Millennium Promenade in the footsteps of Admiral Lord Nelson from Gunwharf Quays to Old Portsmouth using the historic city ramparts. Worlds away in atmosphere, this is a place where history still lives on in the narrow cobbled streets, traditional pubs and cosy tearooms.
Discover the fish market on the Camber, Portsmouth ancient port, first developed by the Normans in the 12th century and the dramatic history of Portsmouth Cathedral, the oldest part dating back to 1185 but bombed and rebuilt since then.
Behind the extensive waterfront are a number of parks, open spaces and award winning flower displays – including Castle Field, Southsea Rose Gardens and the Rock Gardens, all of them great place for a spot of rest and relaxation after such an energetic city break.
