Brigg

Brigg grew up as a crossing point on the River Ancholme. Today it is a thriving market town with a colourful history of fairs and markets. A weekly market is held on Thursdays and there's a Farmers’ Market on the fourth Saturday of each month. The town also has many specialist shops selling everything from ladies' designer fashions to handmade jewellery.

The Ancholme offers some of the most prolific fishing waters in eastern England, and its valley is ideal for walkers and ramblers. Paths run along the riverbank north to the Humber at South Ferriby, passing picturesque bridges such as Horkstow Bridge, designed by Sir John Rennie.

Just a short drive from Brigg are other natural attractions. Twigmoor Woods comes alive with rhododendrons in the spring and Broughton Woods is filled with the heady scent of wild garlic. Two historic mills are well worth a visit. Wrawby Mill, open to visitors on Bank Holidays, is the last surviving post mill in the north of England. Mount Pleasant Windmill at Kirton in Lindsey is a working mill producing flour from organic grain that is then baked into a range of breads. Visit the tea-room and sample its delicious cakes.
