The Peak District’s Historic Border Country

Come to Chesterfield, the bustling market town at the heart of the Border Country, famous for its ‘Crooked Spire’ Church and known to shoppers near and far for its big, open-air market. Visit Bolsover, equally famous for its Castle – an impressive 17th Century mansion built on the site of a Norman fortress.

Dotted around the towns of Chesterfield and Bolsover are sleepy, stone-built villages, set in a gentle landscape of green hills and rippling river valleys where, every now and then, you stumble across a wonderful stately home, a fascinating garden or a stunning view.

The Border Country has a wealth of stately homes. Hardwick Hall, a tribute to the Elizabethan fascination with symmetry and glass. The dramatic hillside ruin of Sutton Scarsdale Hall, once one of Derbyshire’s finest houses.   The gardens and galleries of Renishaw Hall with its woodland trails and sculpture park. And the most famous stately home of all, the ‘Palace of the Peak’ – Chatsworth.

Enjoy the countryside at your own pace, whether you’re a veteran hiker looking for a challenge or a part time walker in search of a short stroll, there’s a track or trail in the Border Country that’s perfect for you.
