Alston

Discover an area of unique and beautiful landscapes. The climb from the Eden Valley to Alston, England's highest market town, via Hartside (1,903 feet) affords spectacular views of the Eden Valley, the Lake District National Park, Carlisle and the Solway Firth. In 2001 this route was nominated one of the top ten most scenic drives in the world. 

Alston boasts potters, blacksmiths, wood turners, furniture makers, knitters, candle makers, rug makers and a mustard manufacturer. Old stone buildings cling to the sides of cobbled streets, narrow lanes lead to secret passageways. You will also come across the unexpected - a 21 foot diameter water wheel, a mill race running through the town, the start of the South Tynedale narrow gauge railway, antique shops, craft galleries and artists galore. The town is an ideal starting point for many walks, some taking in part of the Pennine Way – and you can even go skiing in winter. 

The whole area has much to offer those seeking a less traditional holiday experience. You can, for example, go down a lead mine at Nenthead Mines Heritage Centre or journey on foot from tranquil Garrigill to nearby Ashgill Force and actually stand behind a 50 foot waterfall.
