The picturesque harbour town of Kirkcudbright is a well-known haven for artists, having acquired its name of “Artists Town” by its historical connections. The light and landscape of this coastal town was the reason for an explosion in the early 1900s and the establishment of an artists’ colony. Its well-known residents included colourists and illustrators including EA Hornel, Oppenheimer and Jessie M King.
Kirkcudbright Artists Town offers a number of art exhibitions each year. The annual arts programme is provided by the Harbour Cottage Art Gallery, the High Street Gallery, the Tolbooth Arts Centre and The Stewartry Museum and a major art exhibition of its more famous artists takes place in August in the Town Hall.
Scottish tradition is celebrated in the town for six weeks in July and August, with weekly “Scottish Nights” every Thursday which see Highland and country dancers, pipe bands, musicians and entertainers congregating in the Harbour Square. The town is also a perfect base for touring the surrounding countryside. Galloway Forest Park is close by – 300 square miles of spectacular forest, moorland and lochs with forest drives, walking, cycling and horse riding routes. For children, a visit to Cream O’ Galloway Visitor Centre at Rainton is an absolute must. Entertainment includes a 3D maze, nature trails, puzzle trails and an adventure playground – not forgetting the best local ice cream for miles!
