Machynlleth is where the Welsh rebel Owain Glyndŵr established his parliament in the 15th century and the black and white building is open for those who would like to find out more. There is a market on Maengwyn Street every Wednesday. The Museum of Modern Art offers a contemporary feel in this historic town including temporary art exhibitions, films, theatre and comedy.
Nearby is Europe’s leading Eco-centre, the Centre for Alternative Technology, which leads the field in its innovative ways of researching and implementing sustainable lifestyles. The Craft Centre at Corris has a wide variety of locally made crafts including lovespoons and there’s also King Arthurs Labyrinth. The RSPB reserve at Ynyshir covers over 1000 acres of woodland, freshwater pools, and bogs, and is a wonderful haven for a large variety of flora and fauna.
The mountain of Cader Idris is a popular mountain to climb for walkers, beware, the legend states that anyone who spends the night on the mountain will become a poet, go mad or die!
The Tal y Llyn railway starts at nearby Abergynolwyn and travels to the coast at Tywyn, it was built in the 19th century to transport slate to the coastal ports.
