Tale of The Month

Don't miss this month's feature tale of a must do British experience. This month, Adrian from London, dines with the Williamses in Wales.

Emyr & Val

Dinner with Emyr and Val!

After an easy drive along the M4 from London I arrived in Cardiff to check into my overnight accommodation. Known as Town House, the imposing bed and breakfast was located on Cardiff's Cathedral Road just a few minutes drive from The Millennium Stadium and city centre.

Dinner with the locals

That evening I went along to have dinner with a local Welsh family, my host family was a lovely couple called Emyr and Val Williams. They participate in a rather interesting dining out scheme called Home Dinners in Wales (www.homedinnersinwales.com/).

A real Welsh experience

Around 50 families are in the current scheme in places from Cardiff to the Swansea area and in North Wales. The idea behind the scheme is a very good one and provides visitors with an opportunity to spend an absorbing evening with Welsh families who really enjoy welcoming people into their homes.

A traditional Welsh menu

As you can imagine I was immediately made to feel part of the family and within 20 minutes was sitting down to a sumptuous Welsh meal of Cawl (Welsh broth) followed by Welsh lamb with all the trimmings, and to finish off, a delicious bowl of trifle - one of my favourite desserts.

A word of advice from Grandmother

I was pleased to meet Val's 91-year-old mother who made a remarkable comment about how she led her life. In the small number of words that Val's grandmother did speak in English (Welsh is her first language) she talked about the importance of the clock and table. Basically, always be on time and have time to eat with your family. I think we can learn a lot from that!

My evening with the Williamses was the highlight of my stay in Wales.
