Liverpool: traveller’s tips & tales
Helen, London, England
I’ve been living and studying in Liverpool for 3 years, and I can say without a doubt that the city has given me 3 of the best years of my life. I’m from London originally, and wanted to move out of the city for university, but wanted to experience the city life somewhere else.
Liverpool was definitely the perfect choice. It’s a city that caters brilliantly for students and young people, but it also has great cultural attractions and a fascinating history.
The thing that I love about Liverpool is the people – because it’s not as big a city as London, everyone seems to know each other and the people are all so friendly, really going out of their way to help. I’ve made lots of friends while waiting for the bus!
Liverpool’s famous for it’s music scene, and it’s not hard to see why. On any given night you’ll find great local bands playing at venues all over the city. My favourite place for live music is Hannah’s Bar – a really laid-back place with brilliant music. I love their funk band Fun Tony, they’re regulars at Hannah’s and are sure to hit the big time!
The city’s nightlife is second to none – there are bars and clubs to suit everyone’s tastes. Concert Square is a fantastic place to start the night – Modo makes the best cocktails and has a barbeque outside, Camel Club is great for R&B fans and Reflex is home to a light-up dancefloor and the best 80’s songs.
For dance music fans, Nation is a great night out (it was the home of superclub Cream). For a more laid-back night out, Heebie Jeebies is full of cool musicians (and most nights, some famous faces), and La’go is a great spot for Motown, as it the famous Mathew Street.
Liverpool is also a haven for shoppers. As well as the great town centre, the Met Quarter and Cavern Walks shopping centres have some great shops and designer boutiques.
My favourite part of the city is definitely the docks – full of history and culture, and it’s such a peaceful spot. A walk along the riverfront is a great way to spend a Sunday, and there are loads of museums around too.
It’s really not hard to see why Liverpool is the European Capital of Culture for 2008, and I think it’s a definite must-see for anyone coming to Britain. It’ll always be one of my favourite cities in the world, and I defy anyone to not think the same!
