The Bruces

After William Wallace was executed, Robert the Bruce successfully continued the Scottish resistance against English domination. As a descendant of one of the original challengers to the Scottish throne, Bruce had himself crowned King of Scotland in 1306.

Bruce was able to justify his ascension to the Scottish throne because of his victory at Bannockburn in 1314 near Stirling, and the 'Declaration of Arbroath' in 1320. Throughout his reign, Bruce faced opposition from several challengers to the throne and was accused of acting in an insincere manner in a number of issues during his career.
