Edinburgh Vaults Vigil
If you're a budding ghost hunter or psychic, the Edinburgh Vaults Vigil is something you won't want to miss. Run by Mercat Tours, they're happening on Friday 9, Saturday 10, Friday 16 and Saturday 17 May at the South Bridge in Edinburgh.
To the south of Edinburgh's Royal Mile lies the South Bridge. And under the bridge lie the 18th-century Vaults - a maze of underground chambers where an underground community once thrived.
Both legal and illicit trades flourished here, and when the Vaults were abandoned in the 1830s, they were closed to the public and not reopened again until 1994. What you see in the Vaults today is how people lived nearly 200 years ago. And it seems that some people are still down there…
The Vaults Vigil is a special event held in the Vaults where you can investigate the sources of strange noises, unpleasant smells and cold spots experienced by visitors to the Vaults. Among the several spirits that are said to haunt the Vaults, you might see the ghost of a little boy murdered by the evil Mr Boots.
The vigil isn't just any old tour of the Vaults, oh no - you and a group of other ghost hunters spend the night (00:00 - 06:00) investigating the ghostly goings-on. Your guide will point out the areas that have stimulated the most interest, then you're left on your own to explore.
Later in the night you come back together with your group to discuss your findings and anything strange you've come across. Then, and only then, does your guide share the full details of the paranormal experiences to which witnesses have testified.
