The Standedge Visitor Centre

The Huddersfield Narrow Canal, which runs for 23 miles from Huddersfield to Ashton-under-Lyne, is split into two by the Standedge Tunnel, a unique feat of 18th Century engineering - at 3ΒΌ miles (5200m) long and 645ft (196m) high, it is the highest, longest and deepest canal tunnel in Britain!

British Waterways has created a state-of-the-art visitor centre in a former transhipment warehouse, The Standedge Visitor Centre. This, along with the trip into the Standedge Tunnel is an experience for all. Discover for yourself the amazing interactive story of heroism at the Visitor Centre in Marsden, Huddersfield, and take a guided tour on a state of the art Trip Boat into the depths of the Tunnel itself.

Since opening in May 2001 thousands have visited the centre, enjoying the variety of entertainment and facilities available, including a licensed canal side restaurant. Standedge is a unique location and provides a superb venue for educational visits with both historical links and a canalside environment.
