Castle Kennedy & Lochinch Gardens, Stranraer

Begin your trip in Stranraer, Southern Scotland. Here you'll find beautiful gardens set around the ruins of Castle Kennedy on a peninsula between two lochs, renowned for rhododendrons, including many of Sir Joseph Hooker's introductions from his Himalayan expeditions. Other features include a 19th Century pinetum, monkey-puzzle avenue, walled garden and two-acre lily pond.

Culzean Castle & Country Park, Maybole, South Ayrshire

From Castle Kennedy travel north to Culzean, an 18th century mansion surrounded by country park, with woodland walks, beaches and deer. Recent improvements include the rebuilding of Robert Adam's unique viaduct and restoration of the picturesque 19th century Camellia House, now an orangery. Also look for colourful borders, a fountain garden, swan pond and a spectacular pagoda.
