Finding a place to live

Soho Map

Accommodation can be expensive, especially in London, and many travellers live in shared houses where bills and other costs are shared between the inhabitants. Moving into one of these places can open doors to huge groups of friends as well as saving you money. Try TNT (www.tntmagazine.com/uk/gettingstarted/displayPage.asp?ID=gsuk), local newspapers and the classified ad sites like Gum Tree (www.gumtree.com/) and Loot (www.loot.com) for details of available rooms throughout Britain. Many hostels also offer long-term accommodation which is a good idea when you first arrive for a longer stay.

For details of Estate Agents in different areas throughout Britain, check out Yellow Pages (www.yell.co.uk)  and simply type in ‘Estate Agents’ and the place you are looking for accommodation.

Insider Info

A good tip for finding accommodation in London is to choose a particular area and check out local Estate Agents and notice boards in local newsagents and supermarkets for available rooms/flats. Generally speaking the further out from central London, the cheaper it gets and if there isn’t a Underground Station close in the area this can also affect the price.

Some London areas which are popular and good value include Archway, Dalston, Deptford, Earlsfield, Hackney, Harrow, Shepherds Bush and Tooting.
