Get all shook up at the largest Elvis festival in the world
Once a year the quiet, picturesque Welsh seaside resort of Porthcawl turns into a swarming hive of glitter-jumpsuits, over-sized sunglasses and gyrating hips as the annual Porthcawl Elvis Festival rolls into town. This year’s event runs from 24-26 September 2010.
If you make it to this year’s festival, you can expect over 100 shows and in locations all over Porthcawl transforming the entire town into a living, breathing shire to the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll.
The highlight of the festival is The Elvies, an award show for Elvis Tribute Artists, which is considered as the highest accolade in the Elvis tribute act world. You’ll probably also witness hundreds of couples renewing their vows – Elvis style – in a ceremony on the Promenade like they did last year.
Porthcawl is also an ideal location from which to explore this scenic part of South Wales. Basking in the summer sunshine on the 'Golden Coast', Porthcawl boasts some of the most beautiful beaches in Britain including Rest Bay, which been awarded the coveted European Blue Flag.
The entire coast is brimming with stories and legends. Tragic wrecks and devious smugglers plied their wicked trade along these wild and lonely shores. Magnificent Norman castles and a wealth of heritage attractions along with delightful towns, small villages and miles of footpaths and country lanes make it a superb place for touring.
