Hever Castle

Hever Castle, Kent

Childhood home of Anne Boleyn

To celebrate, we thought we’d take a look back at the lives of royal children over the centuries.

Hever Castle, Kent, England – Anne Boleyn

Little is known of Anne Boleyn’s childhood, but it’s certain that she spent time at Hever before Henry VIII began to court her.

A thousand days after becoming queen, she was executed on charges of treason, adultery and witchcraft. Today, Hever is a beautifully restored castle surrounded by vast, lush gardens. It even has luxurious rooms you can stay in.

Hatfield House, Hertfordshire, England – Elizabeth I

Henry VIII’s three children – Edward, Mary and Elizabeth – all grew up in the Old Palace adjoining Hatfield House. It was here that the young Princess Elizabeth spent her childhood, and eventually, after the death of her sister Mary, learned that she would become queen.

Today’s Hatfield House is home to many objects associated with Elizabeth, from the famous Rainbow Portrait to a scroll claiming to show her direct lineage from Adam and Eve!

Windsor Castle, Windsor, England – Queen Elizabeth II

Windsor Castle has a vibrant royal history, especially where young royals are concerned! Y Bwthyn Bach, also known as The Little House, is a miniature cottage in the grounds of Windsor’s Royal Lodge. The Little House was presented to Queen Elizabeth (then Princess) on her sixth birthday and generations of royal children have played there.

It isn’t open to the public, but you should find plenty to distract you at Windsor Castle itself. Take a tour to see royal treasures including Queen Mary’s Dolls’ House, the largest dolls’ house in the world.

Glamis Castle, Angus, Scotland – Princess Margaret

One of Scotland’s most impressive castles, Glamis Castle was the childhood home of the Queen Mother and the birthplace of her second daughter, Princess Margaret.

Its gorgeous setting, in the foothills of the Angus Glens, together with exhibitions, tours and over 600 years of history make it a fantastic place to visit. It’s just a 90-minute drive from Edinburgh.
