From countryside to country houses, some of Britain’s most spectacular places are owned and maintained by the National Trust.

They say that ‘an Englishman’s home is his castle’ and the Trust cares for many incredible places that Britons once called home. These include some of our finest country house estates, from the Elizabethan splendour of Hardwick Hall in Derbyshire to Dartmoor’s Castle Drogo; the last castle to be built in England.

You can walk in famous footsteps too – Chartwell in Kent was the family home and place of inspiration for Sir Winston Churchill, while in Liverpool you can take a fascinating tour of the Beatles’ Childhood Homes.

The National Trust isn’t all about houses and castles though – even if it does have a spectacular collection. It also takes care of spectacular countryside and special areas in the great outdoors. These include natural wonders like the White Cliffs of Dover, overlooking the English Channel, much of epic Snowdonia in Wales and the famous Giant’s Causeway in Northern Ireland.

Together, the National Trust and the National Trust for Scotland care for acres of stunning scenery, from glorious beaches and coastlines to magnificent mountains and glorious gardens, plus spectacular examples of British heritage and even some pubs!

Both are charities entirely funded by visitors and membership, so any time you visit one of the memorable places in their care you’re not just enjoying a great day out, but helping to conserve these places for generations to come.
