Rolling hills, dramatic coastlines, hectic city scenes – the British landscape has played artist’s muse for centuries. Take a look at some of the beautiful locations that have inspired some of the world’s greatest works of art, and then see the masterpieces for yourself.
Start your tour of great British artists and their inspirations with one of our most treasured modern artists. David Hockney was born in Yorkshire, and the rolling hills of the Yorkshire Wolds have cropped up in several of his masterpieces, including North Yorkshire and Garrowby Hill. You can find Hockney’s works at the Tate Modern and Tate Britain, as well as Salts Mill in Yorkshire, which holds one of the largest collections of Hockney’s art.
Next up, Constable Country - the Dedham Vale and Stour Valley areas of the Essex countryside immortalised by the great British landscape artist John Constable over 200 years ago. The National Trust run tours of Flatford, the site of Constable’s most famous work, The Hay Wain, and you can visit the painting at the National Gallery afterwards.
Head to Manchester to see the city that inspired LS Lowry - one of the best loved British artists of the 20th century. Lowry’s subjects were the street scenes of Manchester and Lancaster and the people in them, who he captured in his unique matchstick men style. Visit The Lowry, which houses the world's largest collection of his works, then visit the sites that inspired him, like Peel Park in Salford.
And of course, we can’t talk about British landscape artists without mentioning JMW Turner. Take a trip to Petworth House, where Turner was commissioned to paint views of the house and garden for many years, resulting in some of his most famous works. Some of these are still at Petworth today, and you can also admire the views at Tate Britain. Turner was also inspired by the stunning landscapes of the Yorkshire Dales, and today you can trace his footsteps on the Turner Trails.
