Working holidays

During the summer months employers are usually looking for large numbers of additional staff and many are pleased to receive applicants from overseas. ‘Summer Jobs in Britain' by David Woodworth and Guy Hobbs, is a good book to refer to. Employment can range from farm work, hotel and catering and child care to conservation work and archaeological excavations.

Work visas

You need to make applications and requests for information directly to the organisation/company. However, before writing letters to prospective employers, you should clarify the terms under which you may visit and work in Britain. Anyone arriving at UK immigration without the necessary visa, letter or invitation or other required documentation, could be sent back home.

It is the responsibility of the Home Office to decide who needs a Work Permit. For information about this and other related immigration matters contact the Home Office Immigration and Nationality Directorate.

The Department for Education and Employment are responsible for issuing Work Permits. Information can be found at www.workpermits.gov.uk (www.workpermits.gov.uk). Electronic applications can be made online.

A visa may also be required before entering the UK. For information contact the Foreign and Commonwealth Office - Email: visa.foruk@fco.gov.uk (www.ukvisas.gov.uk (www.ukvisas.gov.uk)).
