The romantic ruin of Kirby Hall in Northamptonshire is the start point for this tour. It maybe roofless but it is still magical. Over in Lincolnshire is stupendous Burghley with its grandeur spanning many centuries. Up to York to see how 21st-century technology can take you back to Viking York; or stroll the cobbled streets for retail therapy.

The Sage NewcastleGateshead

Day 2

During the ill-fated Northern Rising, Barnard Castle held out for the Queen - just one episode in this castle’s turbulent past. Bewitching Alnwick Castle is the stronghold of the Percy family who fared badly under Elizabeth. Today’s castle has been enhanced by the recent creation of the Alnwick Garden. Not far away are brooding Bamburgh Castle and its golden coast, used in the film Elizabeth. You’ll have passed The Angel of the North on the way, your overnight stay in Newcastle will allow visits to The Sage Gateshead music and arts centre, and the Baltic exhibition space

Overnight: Newcastle
