Loch Lomond and the Trossachs have inspired and enthralled visitors since the writings of Sir Walter Scott first popularised the area in the 19th century, as have the stirring tales of Rob Roy Macgregor, the 17th-century outlaw. His adventurous life as a folk hero can be explored at The Rob Roy and Trossachs Visitor Centre in Callander. The area has also now become Scotland’s first National Park in recognition of its outstanding beauty and offers visitors a choice of cruising or a chance to walk The West Highland Way.
Further south, Stirling is Scotland’s newest city and home to Stirling Castle – the focal point in the Scottish Wars of Independence. The nearby National Wallace Monument celebrates the life of Scotland’s first freedom fighter. Nearby is the awe- inspiring Falkirk Wheel, a 21st-century engineering marvel, where a boatlift connects the Forth and Clyde and The Union Canals.
To the west, Argyll, or the western Highlands is blessed with a mild Atlantic climate and is home to some of the most colourful and beautiful gardens, most notably Crarae Garden on Loch Fyne, Arduaine, south of Oban and Benmore near Dunoon. The Argyll Forest Park offers plenty of walks and trails for the more active.
The picturesque town of Oban is a magnet for visitors and a gateway to the islands. The islands of Mull and Islay offer an abundance of wildlife with organised tours and boat trips, walking routes, beauty spots and heritage. Nearby, Iona is home to the sacred abbey where St Columba brought Christianity to western Scotland and is open to visitors all year round.
