Braemar

Braemar is situated in the heart of Royal Deeside, an area which was made famous by Queen Victoria almost 150 years ago. She was so impressed by the beautiful countryside that her husband, Prince Albert bought her Balmoral Castle as the Royal Family’s holiday home. This tradition has continued with the present Royal Family who visit in September each year. The Castle, nestled in the shadow of Lochnagar Mountain, is open to visitors between April and July and is home to an impressive collection of art and antiques, and surrounded by beautiful gardens and country walks.

Braemar is also host to the famous Braemar Gathering, or Highland Games, which takes place on the first Saturday of September and the Braemar Highland Heritage Centre within the village depicts the history of the gatherings. Also open to visitors is Braemar Castle, a 17th century fairytale castle and fully furnished historic seat of the Farquharsons of Invercauld.

Braemar is also the eastern gateway to the Cairngorm Mountains and an ideal centre for walkers and naturalists. In the winter months, the Glenshee Ski Centre offers a large network of ski lifts, giving access to ski runs over three valleys.
