Brodick

Brodick was a long time favourite holiday resort for Glaswegians and these days attracts walkers, golfers, cyclists and wildlife watchers, as well as those who want to escape from the hurly burly of city life.

For a glimpse into the history of the island, visit the Island of Arran Heritage Museum, which occupies an 18th century farmhouse. Nearby is Brodick Castle and Gardens, originally a Viking keep before it became a stately Victorian home to the Dukes of Hamilton. The house contains collections of silver, porcelain, beautiful furniture and paintings by Gainsborough, Turner and Watteau. The gardens are immaculately maintained, as are the woodland walks. Don’t miss the spectacular rhododendron displays in spring.

Brodick is also an excellent base to tour the island. Follow the coast road north to Lochranza, a lovely little resort and formerly a herring port, situated below Arran’s mountains, and head back down the western side for spectacular views of the Mull of Kintyre.

Brodick, and the island as a whole, has also earned a reputation amongst gourmets – here you will find specialist foods from island produce, fine chocolates, an island cheese company, the Arran Distillery and the Arran Brewery!
