Ever since the Open Golf Championship was held here in 1931, the challenging Carnoustie Links has attracted golfers from around the globe, and is now synonymous with internationally renowned golfing destinations like Troon and St Andrews.
There are many other activities on offer in and around Carnoustie, such as sailing, windsurfing, fishing and horse riding, tennis and bowls. The local leisure centre offers a variety of indoor sports. There are a number of events and activities throughout the summer, including Carnoustie Gala Week which includes entertainment for all the family.
Carnoustie is also an excellent base to tour around the Scottish coastal towns of Angus. Nearby Arbroath is both a holiday resort and an active fishing port with an excellent maritime heritage. The annual Arbroath Sea Fest brings the port to life each summer with events and street theatre. Further south is the ancient Pictish town of Monifieth, which nowadays is well known as a golfing centre, where its links courses are used as qualifying courses for the Open Championship.
