Galashiels

Galashiels lies within the heart of the Borders, situated within the narrow valley of the Gala Water. Although best known for its woollen and textile mills, Galashiels is an excellent base for walking and cycling, or for touring the surrounding Border towns and abbeys. Cyclists can join the 90-mile Tweed Cycle Way which runs between Berwick and Biggar. The long distance walk, the Southern Upland Way, also runs through the town.

In June, the town commemorates its history with the Braw Lad’s Gathering – a week of ceremonies and events, and visitors can experience the Common Ridings in neighbouring Hawick and Selkirk, also in June.

Lochcarron Cashmere and Wool Centre producer of the world’s largest range of pure wool worsted tartans offers factory tours of the weaving process and, within the mill, the Galashiels Museum recalls the development of the town.

The Old Gala House is also open to visitors, and this 16th century converted home of the Lairds of Galashiels is now a converted interpretative centre set within landscaped gardens, with arts exhibitions and family history displays.
