Atonement
Glamour, history, romance… Atonement has it all. Not only is this Golden Globe-winning film made by the director of Pride & Prejudice, but it also stars 2 of Britain’s best actors – Keira Knightly and James McAvoy.
Based on the best-selling book by English author Ian McEwan, Atonement is set in 1930s Britain and tells the story of wealthy Cecilia Tallis (Knightly) and Robbie Turner (McAvoy), the educated son of the family’s housekeeper.
When the 2 fall in love, Cecilia’s 13-year-old sister Briony (played by Saoirse Ronan) – who has a crush on Robbie – interferes, going so far as accusing Robbie of a crime he didn’t commit. When Robbie is arrested and Briony sticks to her lie, the course of 3 lives is changed forever.
The film spans decades, following Cecilia and Robbie as they are torn away from each other, and Briony as she seeks forgiveness for her childhood lie. Through a terrible and courageous act of imagination, she finds the path to her uncertain penance, and to an understanding of the power of enduring love.
As well as the fascinating story, you’ll be mesmerized by shots of the beautiful English countryside and 1930s glamour, and touched by the scenes of war-torn London. Atonement was filmed on location in Britain, so when you come to Britain you can see the city, countryside and coast locations for yourself.
In fact, filming of the main house scenes were all shot on location in Stokesay Court near Birmingham and they are now running guided tours of the famous building. For more information on the tours please click here
