Fiona Buchanan Interview

Fiona Buchanan

'I have worked in the food industry all my life, from production (oyster farm of my parents in Colantrive, Argyle) to cheffing and everything in between', says Fiona Buchanan. Fiona has also worked with chef Nick Nairn on his last successful TV series, 'Island Harvest', which was broadcast worldwide. Her shop Heart Buchanan has won numerous awards - most recently the Foodie Oscar Glenfiddich Spirit of Scotland Award for Food, 2003.

Heart Buchanan Fine Food and Wine in Glasgow is a haven of fine food including salt-marsh lamb, Scottish new potates and Uist langoustines - while the shelves are stacked full of organic herbs, salads, cheeses and venison and Salar oak-roast salmon.  Also watch out for Fiona's daily food blackboard menu for those interested in having a take-away (usually after 2pm each day).

Heart Buchanan is a member of the Guild of Fine Food Retailers and recently appeared in the Guild's latest publication called Eating British.

The langoustine mayo rolls from the guy with the wee stall on Oban Pier - he's magic!

What is your favourite dish or recipe?

Today it's…an Aberdeen Angus chargrilled burger with mustard and tarragon butter and home-made chips and home-made ketchup.

Name an inspirational food person? Why?

Alice Waters - because of the wonderful, inspirational and edible schoolyard project she sponsors. Have a look at her website - Edible Schoolyard (www.edibleschoolyard.org) - it's what we should all be working on in this country.
