Want a day out with a difference?

Discover and explore a major part of Britain's maritime history at one of Britain's lighthouses. Many of these lighthouses, often found in Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty, have pointed the way for way for seafarers for centuries.

Lighthouses offer a fantastic opportunity to explore some of the country's most symbolic and historical landmarks. Climb the winding staircase to the top and discover the role and romance of these landmark buildings. See how lighthouse keepers lived and worked for centuries - right up until 1998 when the last manned lighthouse in Britain, North Foreland in Kent, was automated.

It is now possible to visit lighthouses in England and Wales, maintained by Trinity House from Longstone off the north-east coast to Southwold, in the heart of the beautiful Suffolk Heritage Coast, from Start Point in South Devon to Alderney in The Channel Islands. Each lighthouse has its own unique history and legends and is well worth a visit.

For an unusual place to rest and re-charge your batteries why not stay the night? A number of former lighthouse keeper cottages have been transformed into prestige accommodation. Set amongst some of Britain’s most beautiful coastal scenery, the cottages provide the perfect opportunity to unwind.

Full details of the precise location of each lighthouse, public transport links, car parking information, opening times and admission prices please see www.trinityhouse.co.uk (www.trinityhouse.co.uk/).
