City of Bath

Designated a World Heritage Site in 1987.

Bath's importance to world heritage focuses on its remarkably well-preserved Roman remains and baths, which blend seamlessly with elegant 18th-century architecture.

Bath is built on the site of Britain's only natural hot springs. It was the Romans who first tapped into this unique source and constructed a network of luxurious baths. Amazingly, they remain the best-preserved Roman baths in the world. Even better than in Rome itself!

But it's not only the hot baths that make Bath such an incredible place. Remember, it's the whole city that's a designated World Heritage Site, not just its Roman antiquities. In the 18th century they had an incredibly elegant makeover with neoclassical Palladian buildings, which blend harmoniously with the Roman remains.

Bath has some of the finest architectural and historic treasures in Europe, including the Roman Baths and Pump Room, 15th-century Abbey and stunning Royal Crescent and Pulteney Bridge.

Bath's status as a world-class city has also been further enhanced this year by the opening of Thermae Bath Spa. Britain's only natural thermal spa offering visitors the chance to bathe in the naturally warm waters as the Romans and Celts did over 2000 years ago.

Set in the rolling Somerset countryside, less than 2 hours from London, Bath is a beautiful and unforgettable place to visit. The city has a lively, year-round calendar of festivals, theatre, musical and sporting events. You can easily explore the compact city on foot and discover the diverse range of restaurants and traditional pubs interspersed among some of the best quality independent shops in Britain.
