From the McManus Galleries (www.mcmanus.co.uk/) in Dundee located in a magnificent Victorian Gothic building, home to an outstanding collection of art including fine examples of 19th and 20th century Scottish painting, drawings and prints.
Aberdeen’s famous attractions
Further north in the ‘granite city’ of Aberdeen you’ll find the Peacock Visual Arts Gallery. Here you can have the chance to rub shoulder with contemporary artists, see their exhibitions and participate in artists’ talks, debates and workshops. And while in Aberdeen, don’t miss the Aberdeen Maritime Museum (www.aagm.co.uk). Situated on the historic Shiprow and incorporating Provost Skene's House, it tells the story of the city's long maritime history.
Favourite historical museums
In Stonehaven visit the Tolbooth Museum (www.aagm.co.uk/code/emuseum.asp?page=buildings_tolbooth), a significant historical building dating back to the 16th century and learn why Episcopal priests were imprisoned there in the mid 1700s. Back in the capital city of Edinburgh visit the fascinating and unusual Museum on the Mound, which opened to the public for the first time in 1987. It’s located in a major bank and the museum tells the story of three centuries of Scottish banking. Don’t miss the gold coins and bullion chest.
