Tate Liverpool

If you want to begin your tour of Liverpool’s museums and galleries then head for Fact, an imposing arts centre created to show off the work of artists from around the world. Just a few minutes walk away you can rub shoulders with Gainsborough, Rembrandt and Poussin at The Walker (www.visitliverpool.com/site/attractions/walker-art-gallery-p8490), officially the national gallery of the North of England and packed with an impressive collection of paintings going back as far as the 14th century.

William Lever’s utopian village

The Merseyside Maritime Museum (www.visitliverpool.com/site/attractions/merseyside-maritime-museum-p8987) recalls in vivid detail the glory days of Liverpool’s role as a ‘gateway to the world’ over the decades and centuries. Further along the river you could pay a visit to the Port Sunlight Village (www.portsunlightvillage.com/default.asp) in Birkenhead. Founded over 100 years ago, William Lever’s objective was to create a living utopia for his soap factory workers – complete with recreational space.
